30 Day Manga Challenge: Day 5 – Manga You’re Ashamed You Enjoyed

Admittedly I’ve probably said every challenge so far has been tough, but they’ve been challenging for different reasons than today. Today I have to pick a manga I’m ashamed I enjoy which is hard! I generally don’t read manga that I’d be ashamed to admit to having read. That’s why today I only have one pick for the challenge rather than a few.

No Game No Life Manga Volume 1

For today’s challenge I’ve picked the manga for No Game, No Life. Now I really enjoy the series but my first taste of it, sadly, was the manga which is extremely fanservice heavy. I remember when the anime was announced I told a friend of mine how the manga wasn’t really… tame shall we say, and preceded to watch the first episode on my own to check it out before going on to watch it with her.

I really love the No Game, No Life plot and characters. They aren’t favourites of mine but as far as the ‘characters stuck in a video game like world’ genre goes it’s definitely up there above Problem Children Are Coming From Another World, Aren’t They?. The reason I say I’m ashamed to have enjoyed it is because the series is so fanservice heavy and because the relationship between Sora and Shiro isn’t really…ideal to say the least.

The series came off a lot better when animated than the manga does. I like the series but it’s not one I can readily recommend because I know I’d get a few strange looks from friends. I could push them towards the anime and the maybe the light novels, but the manga? No. It’s not the safest adaption to push.

In recent memory this is the only manga I’m ashamed I’ve enjoyed because I shouldn’t have. It’s not that good compared to the source, it really isn’t. I love that world and that cast though so I’m a sucker for it. This probably isn’t the best time to admit that despite everything I’ve said above I’ll be buying the first volume, is it?

This was a fun one to look forward to because I really had no idea what you’d be putting down. The choice you did go with makes me curious to see how bad the manga actually is. If you ever do buy the graphic novels, I’ll be sure to swipe a copy and flip through it purely for teasing purposes~

I wish I had an answer for this question but I’ve sadly not read enough manga overall to actually be ashamed of enjoying one. :p
