Late last night a rumour went around that Studio Ghibli were closing their production department. Since then a source for the news has been found. Although it doesn’t strictly say the studio are stepping away from making films, it doesn’t really give us too much hope that they won’t either.
Toshio Suzuki was speaking on TBS show Jōnetsu Tairiku yesterday and was discussing how the studio is currently going through a restructuring so as to create an environment for the next generation. Toshio did comment that it isn’t impossible for the studio to continue creating anime forever, however right now they intend to take a pause to consider where they intend on going from here.
So, although the studio isn’t stepping away from anime just yet, considering Hayao Miyazaki’s retirement it’s still a very real possibility.
